Leveraging Technology for Language Promotion and Preservation: Engage Africa NLP

Engage Africa NLP is committed to preserving and promoting African linguistic heritage in the digital age, ensuring these languages remain relevant and widely used. With an initial emphasis on Cameroonian languages such as Ghɔmálá and Fufulde, the project’s primary objective is to develop NLP tools, including machine translation models, chatbots and transcription, accompanied by APIs for widespread integration and use.

To achieve this, we adopted a phased approach, beginning with the development of a translation crowdsourcing platform named Engage Africa NLP, currently available on iOS and Android. We will work with language experts and leverage gamification to engage native speakers, linguists, and for data collection and annotation.

Subsequently, the platform will evolve to host the tools obtained by training the model.

Partnership with technology companies and academic institutions is crucial in securing the necessary compute resources and expertise.
